At Milford Advocacy for the Homeless, we see it every day. The desire to move forward is there, but without proper identification, progress can come to a halt. That is why we are proud to share a new resource now available on our website, designed to help neighbors take one of the most important steps toward stability. Access to identification is access to opportunity, dignity, and independence.

A valid Delaware Photo ID, an official Birth Certificate, and a Social Security card are foundational documents. These are often required to apply for employment, access public benefits, secure housing, open a bank account, enroll in education or job training, and receive healthcare. Without them, individuals face barriers that can feel overwhelming and discouraging. With them, doors begin to open.

Our new resource page brings this information together in one clear and supportive place. It explains why each document matters and provides direct links and guidance on how to obtain or replace them. Whether someone is starting from scratch, replacing lost documents, or helping a loved one navigate the process, this page was created to meet people where they are and walk alongside them as they move forward.

A Delaware Photo ID or State ID is essential for daily life and does not require a driver’s license. A Birth Certificate is often the first document needed to obtain all others, serving as proof of birth and identity. A Social Security card is critical for legal employment and access to benefits. Each document builds upon the other, creating a pathway toward stability and self-sufficiency.

This page provides a simplified overview of how to obtain identification in Delaware, with direct links to official government websites where more detailed and up-to-date information is available.

If transportation, fees, or other barriers make it difficult to obtain your identification, help is available. Our ID Assist Program offers support with transportation and assistance with the cost of acquiring required documents.
