First Friday in downtown Milford has something special. The streets fill with people, conversations happen between neighbors, and our community has an opportunity to simply be together. For Milford Advocacy for the Homeless, First Friday is about more than setting up a table. It is about showing up. It gives us a chance to meet people where they are, listen to their stories, share resources, and make sure our neighbors know support is available when they need it.
A Night of Connection and Community
At our latest First Friday, 89 community members stopped by and connected with us.
Some came looking for information. Others stopped to ask a question, learn about our programs, or simply talk. Families visited with their children, and seven children left with something pretty exciting: a bicycle of their own. Through our Second Wind Bicycles Program, 7 children’s bicycles were distributed during the event. A bicycle may seem like a simple thing, but for a child it can mean independence, recreation, time with friends, and the joy of having something that belongs to them. Seeing those bicycles leave with their new young riders was one of the highlights of the evening.
Putting Resources Into People’s Hands
One of the most important things we can do in community outreach is to make information easy to find before someone reaches a crisis. During First Friday, we distributed more than 100 wallet-sized resource cards with information people can keep, carry, and share with someone else who may need help. Those resources included information about 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, the Marigold App, and MAH Journey Partner support. Sometimes the person taking a resource card needs it themselves. Sometimes they know someone who does. Either way, each card creates another opportunity for someone to know where to turn and that they are not alone.
A Meal for the Road
We also handed out 30 Meals in a Bag.
Food insecurity does not always look the way people expect it to. It can affect someone who is unhoused, a senior stretching a fixed income, a working family trying to make it until payday, or someone experiencing an unexpected financial setback. A simple meal can meet an immediate need while also opening the door to a conversation about what other support might help. That is why our work rarely begins and ends with the item we hand someone.
The Numbers Tell Only Part of the Story
By the end of First Friday, we had:
- 🚲 7 children’s bicycles distributed
- ❤️ 89 community members connected with
- 📇 100+ wallet resource cards shared
- 🥪 30 Meals in a Bag handed out
We celebrate those numbers, but impact is about people, not statistics. Behind every number is a neighbor. Behind every resource card is the possibility of someone finding help. Behind every meal is a person who will have something to eat. Behind every bicycle is a child who gets to experience the simple joy of riding. And behind every conversation is an opportunity to say, in one way or another: You are not alone.
This Is Why We Show Up
Our work is rooted in dignity, compassion, and service. We believe meaningful change begins by listening, connecting people with resources, and walking alongside them as they take their next steps toward stability. First Friday allows us to do exactly that. Thank you to everyone who stopped by our table, donated, volunteered, shared resources, asked questions, or simply took a few minutes to connect with us. And thank you to the community that continues to make this work possible.
Showing up, sharing resources, and walking alongside our neighbors makes a difference.
