There is a special kind of joy that comes when someone we have been walking beside finally says the words, “I have a place.”
For individuals and families who have experienced homelessness or housing instability, securing a new home is more than receiving a key. It is a turning point. It is safety. It is privacy. It is a place to rest, cook a meal, close a door, and begin rebuilding life with greater stability. At Milford Advocacy for the Homeless, these are some of the moments we celebrate most. We are rooted in dignity, compassion, and service, and we believe our work does not end when housing is secured. In many ways, a new chapter is just beginning.
The Joy Comes With a New Challenge
Imagine finally being approved for an apartment, room, trailer, or house after months of uncertainty. You walk through the door and realize something very quickly. You have a home, but very little to put inside it. There may be no bed to sleep on, no table to sit around, no dishes for dinner, no towels, no pots and pans, and no cleaning supplies to prepare the space. For many of the neighbors we serve, there simply is not enough money left after deposits, utilities, transportation, food, and other immediate expenses to purchase everything needed to establish a household.
That is where our Welcome Home efforts become so important. Our volunteers begin searching. We reach out through community posts. We talk with donors. We watch Marketplace. We look for gently used furniture and household goods. We coordinate pickups, sort what is available, and work to get those items into a new home.
We celebrate right alongside our neighbors, but we also experience the challenges with them when the resources are not there.
Right Now, Two Families Need Our Community
We currently have two families preparing to move into their new homes, and we do not have enough inventory or promised donations to provide the household essentials they need. That is a difficult place for us to be. We want to walk into these moments able to say, “We have what you need.” Right now, we cannot do that without help from our community.
We urgently need gently used or new household essentials such as:
- Furniture, including beds, dressers, tables, chairs, sofas, and small storage pieces
- Bedding, including sheets, blankets, comforters, pillows, and towels
- Kitchen essentials, including dishes, silverware, pots, pans, cooking utensils, glasses, mugs, and small appliances
- Cleaning supplies, including buckets, brooms, mops, trash cans, laundry supplies, and basic household cleaners
- Everyday home items that help turn a space into a functional, comfortable place to live
These are not extras. They are the things that make it possible to cook, sleep, clean, organize, and begin settling into a new home.
We Also Need the Hands That Make It Possible
Donated household goods only help if we can get them from one place to another. This program depends not only on donated items, but also on the volunteers who help us pick up, load, transport, and deliver them. A dresser may be sitting in someone’s garage ready to be donated. A table may be listed for free on Marketplace. A family may be ready to move in tomorrow. Without someone available to pick it up and deliver it, the opportunity can disappear.
Our Welcome Home work is truly community-powered. It takes donors, drivers, volunteers, and people willing to share our requests so we can find what is needed when it is needed.
This Is What Walking Beside Someone Looks Like
Walking beside someone means celebrating the key in their hand. It also means noticing the empty room behind the door. It means helping search for a bed. Finding dishes. Locating a table. Carrying boxes. Making phone calls. Picking up furniture. Delivering a lamp, a microwave, a set of towels, or the first pot someone will use to cook dinner in their new kitchen. These may seem like ordinary household items.
To someone starting again, they can mean comfort, dignity, independence, and the feeling that this new place truly belongs to them.
Please Help Us Welcome Them Home
If you have household essentials you no longer need, please consider donating them today. If you have a truck, SUV, van, or simply the ability to help with pickups and deliveries, we need you too. And if you cannot donate an item or volunteer your time, sharing this message may help it reach someone who can.
The need is urgent, and the only way we can continue helping neighbors furnish their new homes is through the generosity of our community. Please help us make sure that when a neighbor finally receives the keys to a new home, they do not have to walk into it empty-handed. Securing housing is an incredible milestone and sometimes, loving-kindness looks like helping turn that housing into a home.
