At Milford Advocacy for the Homeless, we believe that every child deserves stability, dignity, and the chance to thrive. Experiencing homelessness as a child can be overwhelming, leaving young people feeling unseen, unheard, and uncertain about their future. Thankfully, the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act provides vital protections and supportive services to ensure that no child is left behind.
What the McKinney-Vento Act Does
The McKinney-Vento Act is a federal law designed to ensure that children and youth experiencing homelessness have the same rights to education as their peers. It helps remove the barriers that homelessness often creates by offering:
- School Stability: Children can remain in their school of origin, even if their housing situation changes.
- Transportation Assistance: Schools must provide or arrange transportation so children can continue attending their school of origin.
- Immediate Enrollment: Children experiencing homelessness can enroll in school without delay, even if they lack documents like proof of residency, immunization records, or prior academic records.
- Access to Support Services: Students are connected with resources such as school meals, counseling, and tutoring to help them succeed academically and emotionally.
- McKinney-Vento Liaisons: Every school district designates a liaison to identify students in unstable housing and help them access these services.
Why This Matters in Our Community
In our own community, families may be living doubled-up with relatives, staying in motels, or moving from place to place without stable housing. Children in these situations face unique challenges. The McKinney-Vento Act works to protect their education and well-being, helping ensure that housing instability does not determine their future.
At MAH, we walk alongside families and children with compassion, supporting them through our programs that address food insecurity, transportation, and essential needs. Together, with the protections of McKinney-Vento, we can help young people continue their education, build resilience, and move toward a brighter tomorrow.
How You Can Help

- Connect: If you know a child or family experiencing housing instability, encourage them to reach out to their school district’s McKinney-Vento liaison.
- Support: Partner with MAH to provide essentials such as food, clothing, and school supplies that help children feel confident and prepared.
Our Commitment
Rooted in dignity, compassion, and service, MAH is committed to making sure children and families in Milford and surrounding areas never feel alone. The McKinney-Vento Act gives children a pathway to stability, but it takes a caring community to walk beside them.
Join us to make a difference today. Together, we can help every child hold on to hope, stability, and the promise of a better future.
