A bicycle can be more than a way to get from one place to another.

For someone working to rebuild stability, a bicycle can mean getting to work on time, reaching an appointment, picking up groceries, or simply having the freedom to travel without depending on someone else for a ride. For a child or family, it can mean time together, fresh air, independence, and a little bit of joy. That is what Second Wind Bicycles is about. Through Milford Advocacy for the Homeless, Inc., donated bicycles are given a second life and placed into the hands of neighbors who can use them. But before a bicycle can roll out the door, there is a lot that happens behind the scenes.

  • Someone has to pick it up.
  • Someone has to look it over.
  • Someone has to repair it.
  • Someone has to keep track of the bicycles and parts.
  • Someone has to connect with the person receiving it and coordinate delivery.

And someone has to help bring all of those pieces together. We are now building the Second Wind Bicycles Team, and there is a place on this team for people with many different talents. These are volunteer opportunities. No paid positions are involved. What we are looking for are people who would enjoy using their time, skills, organization, mechanical ability, or willingness to help to make a real difference.

🚲 Second Wind Bicycle Drivers

Sometimes the first step in giving a bicycle a second wind is simply getting it where it needs to go. Our volunteer drivers help pick up donated bicycles, transport bicycles and parts, and deliver completed bicycles to neighbors throughout our service area. You do not need to be a bicycle mechanic. You just need to be dependable, comfortable transporting bicycles, and willing to help us keep things moving.

What Drivers May Help With

  • Picking up donated bicycles
  • Transporting bicycles to our facility
  • Picking up bicycle parts and supplies
  • Delivering refurbished bicycles
  • Coordinating transportation with other Second Wind team members
  • Helping ensure bicycles arrive safely at their destination

Drivers are an important connection between the donor, our Second Wind workshop, and the neighbor receiving the bicycle. Sometimes a few miles in your vehicle can help give someone many more miles of independence.

🔧 Second Wind Bicycle Team Members

This is where donated bicycles begin their transformation. Second Wind Bicycle Team Members assess bicycles, identify repairs that are needed, clean and refurbish bikes, replace parts when necessary, and help prepare each bicycle for its next rider. Some volunteers may already know their way around a bicycle. Others may have basic mechanical skills and would enjoy learning more. You do not have to know everything before joining the team. We are looking for people who enjoy working with their hands, solving problems, learning new skills, and seeing the tangible results of their work.

Team Members May Help With

  • Inspecting donated bicycles
  • Identifying needed repairs
  • Cleaning bicycles
  • Adjusting brakes and gears
  • Repairing or replacing tires and tubes
  • Replacing basic bicycle parts
  • Performing safety checks
  • Organizing tools and repair supplies
  • Preparing completed bicycles for delivery

There is something special about taking a bicycle that has been sitting unused and watching it become dependable transportation again. That is a Second Wind.

❤️ Second Wind Bicycle Team Lead

Every strong team needs someone who can help people work together. The Second Wind Bicycle Team Lead will help guide the development of this growing volunteer team. This person does not need to do everything. In fact, one of the most important parts of the role is helping other volunteers discover where they fit. The Team Lead will help coordinate the work, welcome new volunteers, identify priorities, and create an environment where people enjoy serving together.

The Team Lead May Help With

  • Building and developing the Second Wind volunteer team
  • Welcoming and orienting new volunteers
  • Helping assign bicycles and projects
  • Coordinating with drivers and the Administrative Coordinator
  • Identifying repair and supply needs
  • Supporting volunteers as they learn
  • Helping establish simple processes for bicycle assessment and refurbishment
  • Keeping the team focused on safety, quality, and service
  • Communicating needs and progress with MAH leadership

We are looking for someone who enjoys bringing people together, organizing work, encouraging others, and helping a program grow. This is an opportunity to help shape Second Wind from the ground up.

📋 Second Wind Administrative Coordinator

Not every important job in a bicycle program requires a wrench. Behind every bicycle is information that needs to be tracked and people who need to be contacted. Our Second Wind Administrative Coordinator helps keep the program organized so bicycles, parts, volunteers, and deliveries do not fall through the cracks. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys organization, communication, lists, spreadsheets, scheduling, and helping a team stay connected.

The Administrative Coordinator May Help With

  • Tracking bicycle inventory
  • Recording donated bicycles and available parts
  • Updating the status of bicycles being refurbished
  • Keeping records of bicycles ready for delivery
  • Calling or contacting neighbors to arrange or confirm deliveries
  • Coordinating information with volunteer drivers
  • Helping schedule bicycle pickups and deliveries
  • Maintaining basic Second Wind program records
  • Communicating updates to the Team Lead and other volunteers

A bicycle may be physically ready to go, but without someone coordinating the details, it may never reach the person waiting for it.This volunteer helps turn good intentions into completed connections.

It Takes a Team

Second Wind Bicycles is not being built around one person who can do everything. It is being built around a team of people who each bring something different.

  • One person may know bicycle repair.
  • Another may have a truck or SUV and enjoy driving.
  • Another may love keeping spreadsheets organized.
  • Another may be a natural team builder.
  • Together, those individual gifts create something much bigger.
  • A donated bicycle becomes safe transportation.
  • A pile of bicycle parts becomes a working bike.
  • A volunteer becomes part of a community.
  • And a neighbor gains another tool for moving forward.

At Milford Advocacy for the Homeless, Inc., our work is rooted in dignity, compassion, and service. We believe in meeting people where they are and walking alongside them as they rebuild their lives. Sometimes, walking alongside someone means helping them ride.

You Do Not Have to Be a Bicycle Expert

One of the biggest reasons people hesitate to volunteer is because they assume they need special experience. For many of these roles, you do not. If you can drive, organize, communicate, repair, teach, learn, coordinate, encourage, or simply show up consistently, there may be a place for you on this team.We are looking for people who share our commitment to:

  • Passion
Being fueled by the desire to make a difference.
  • Service
Sharing resources, time, talents, and support.
  • Humanity
Treating every person with dignity and respect.
  • Impact
Turning individual acts of service into meaningful change.

Help Us Give Bicycles a Second Wind

We are building this team now. Whether you can volunteer regularly or have a specific skill that could strengthen the program, we would love to connect with you.

Consider becoming a:

🚲 Second Wind Bicycle Driver
🔧 Second Wind Bicycle Team Member
❤️ Second Wind Bicycle Team Lead
📋 Second Wind Administrative Coordinator

  • Your time may help repair a bicycle.
  • Your skills may help build a team.
  • Your willingness to serve may help someone reach work, an appointment, their family, or their next opportunity.

And together, we can give more than bicycles a second wind. We can help create new possibilities.
