This winter has been hard on the homeless who live out of tents. The winds have been high tearing holes in the tents and the multiple snowfall with one storm leaving 12+ inches of snow in its wake causing tents to collapse. The camp was full of snow, water and mud as the days progressed. Crawling in & out of collapsed tents until we could provide temporary 2 person tents were provided as a quick resolution for a place to be out of the weather.

We received special donations that were allocated for the resurrection of new tent set-ups. These set-ups start with nine pallets, then a layer of plastic sheeting, a 10 x 12 tarp, then the tent covered by another 10 x 12 tarp to keep the wind out, and a 12 x 25 tarp hanging above the tent to provide shelter from falling branches and other elements that are tent destroyers. Each set-up is made to house 2 individuals. Additionally, cots, pillows and sleeping bags are provided, as needed.

On Saturday, January 21, 2022 a small group of advocacy volunteers donated their time and strength to help resurrect a tent set-up for each of the individuals who needed new tents. They worked with agility and nibbleness. Each individual who needed a tent set-up helped to resurrect their new home. The day was long. Because of their joint efforts, people were able to sleep in a secure tent with a few comforts.

Most of these indivdiuals have a heater for each tent. We received an addtional donation and heaters are on their way, so that every tent has a heater. Propane canisters were handed out at the end of the day. We typically hand-out one propane tank a night which only lasts four hours, as we have a limited supply and there are 18 people currently receiving canisters on any night that the temperature is 32 degress or less. This day, we handed out two to each person, so that they could get a good night sleep in a dry tent with heat throughout the night.

Mid-way through the day, Bonnie came to warm everyone with chicken and dumplings. This is a favorite dish for everyone. With a full & warm belly everyone was able to continue working throughout the day. When the volunteers were leaving, there were happy faces and many words of thanks from the individuals who received the gift of a dry and warm shelter. We don’t tak photos of the homeless, but if you could see their faces they were smiling from ear-to-ear. They asked us to share how grateful they were to everyone who donated to make this all possible.

Thank you to our volunteers: Terry, Nan, Tom, Thomas, Ramona, Keith who spent the day bringing joy to those in need.
